Lucy, on the left, and Kaleb, young bonobos at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens play and "laugh" together. In Kinshasa, I would tickle young bonobos in the usual tickle spots along the sides, and make laughing sounds. The apes would respond in a human-like fashion, twisting to get away, then coming back for more, with a sort of "ha, ha, ha" chortle. I would swear that they, too, were laughing.Photo by M. Brickner
